Does your mother know?
19 03 2008With an absolute unshakable conviction in the sanctity of my own guyhood, I will freely admit this: I saw Mamma Mia during its touring production in Chicago, and had a great time. It involved at one point standing up, and clapping, and singing along to “Dancing Queen.”
That said, this trailer gives me pause.
I’m not sure if it’s the Meryl Streep belting ABBA, or the corny jokes that seem to thud a bit more loudly trapped forever on the screen than they would delivered within the ephemeral womb of the theater…but it’s an odd-looking duck, that’s for sure.
I’ve always had a weakness for ABBA, however–some of the best-written pop songs of the past fifty years, says I–so maybe this will be a rental for me. Or something I’ll catch on cable.
Alone. Without my wife. Which I say, again, with an absolutely unshakable conviction in the sanctity of my guyhood.
I am actually pretty excited about this, weird as it may end up being. It seems like they are fully embracing the inherent dorkiness of the musical (”hey, we’re all set up for a wedding…whatever shall we do?!”), which is key. I wonder if the end credits will feature the completely spontaneous, not-at-all set up “encores.”
